Welcome to the home page of State House Press and the McWhiney Foundation Press, non-profit publishers of quality books on the history of Texas and of the Civil War. Both are operated by the Grady McWhiney Research Foundation, which recently received the 2005 Mary Moody Northen Award of the Texas Historical Foundation for these publishing activities and for its development of the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. You can browse our offerings by clicking here, though specialized series are listed separately. Be sure to check for special sales of selected items.

State House Press publishes not only Texana by contemporary authors but reprints of classic accounts of Texas life and history otherwise inaccessible to the general public. It has developed an enviable reputation for high standards of scholarship and readability. As Kent Biffle of the Dallas Morning News once said, “I never met a State House Press book I didn’t like.”

In addition to individual book titles, State House publishes several series of books. The Texas Heritage Series and the Military History of Texas Series have recently been joined by a new series designed for younger readers. The Stars of Texas Series consists of biographies of significant figures from Texas history which are designed to be read by children studying Texas history in the fourth grade of our schools.

The McWhiney Foundation Press specializes in books on the history of the Old South and the Civil War. We are probably best known for our Civil War Campaigns and Commanders Series. Our goal with these titles has been to make history accessible to as many readers as possible by providing brief, authoritative books on important events and leaders of the Civil War. To accomplish this task, we have recruited some of America’s leading historians and many bright new scholars. One of the latter is Than Dossman, who is our current featured author. We believe firmly in narrative history, in telling a good story, and telling it well – without losing sight of the people who made history and the events that changed a nation.
